On Sunday 7th July we sent 35 gymnasts from the club to the annual Neston sets (floor and vault) competition. This is the first year Birkenhead have taken such a large amount of Gymnasts to this competition. Neston set is a friendly competition between local clubs and the main aim of all clubs is to have fun, complete the routines, win some medals and bring home the club trophy. All gymnasts at Neston sets get a participation medal which is lovely especially for those who are entering a competition for the first time and maybe haven’t been in the sport long. The gymnasts all had a fantastic day and we came home with a whole host of medals. So many in fact that we won the overall competition and the club was awarded the coveted title of Neston Sets Champions 2013 (see trophy). Well done to all our gymnasts

Today 13 members of our boys squad competed in the Men’s Artistic Regional Assessment Grades, held at Robin Park in Wigan. 66 Northwest competitors took part in total. For all of our boys it was either their first or second time competing in a 6 piece competition and what a competition it was, with all of the boys medalling. Ethan kicked off the competition setting the standard and very quickly all eyes were on Birkenhead Gymnastics Club. Robert took the overall floor title with a score of 9.45, whilst Charlie narrowly missed the PPP title by 0.2. Matthew had an excellent overall competition and although he didn’t win any titles, he was the anchor of the group showing true leadership with 8 clean routines. Ethan took the Rings, Pbar and Pommel title and was the only boy to receive a perfect 10 all day for his pommel routine.

In the novice competition our 6,7 and 8 year old’s competed against 22 other boys up to 12 years old. They competed on all pieces except rings. James Woolfall won the PPP title, whilst Nathan won the High Bar title. Jack Harper placed 2nd on floor, Jacob Ryan 3rd, whilst Morgan Handford took 3rd on Pommel. Jacob Ryan and Jack Saunders placed joint 2nd on PPP with Jack Harper 3rd. Harry Lewis, Josh Parsley and Jack Shepard competed 6 clean routines and although they did not place they along with the rest of the boys ALL passed there grades with merits and distinctions.

Gymnast with an overall score of over 70% received a pass/bronze medal
Gymnast with an overall score of over 80% received a merit/silver medal
Gymnast with an overall score of over 90% received a distinction/gold medal

Well another excellent day for the club and Drill as we leave the competition boasting 4 county champions and a haul full of medals. Everybody medaled and many got two to three medals each not counting the four trophies :) . The judges and organisers all commented on the high standard of gymnastics that our gymnasts showed and we all had a brilliant day. Thanks to everyone at drill that has supported us this far.

Congratulations New Coaches!

On Saturday 1st April the Williams family took the train down to London for the London Open 6 piece competition. This was Aled’s first major competition and dad Simon’s first time on the floor as a newly qualified Level 2 coach  – a nervous time for both! The London Open is a prestigious national competition with competitors ranging from first timers like Aled through to BG squad members and even international competitors. Aled competed in the Level 1 under age category, showing no nerves at all. He came a respectable 10th overall with some great performances including 5th on pommel.

Here is a video of him performing on pommel

Today the Olympic Torch came to Birkenhead. As part of that celebration Wirral council organised a series of events in Birkenhead Park. Squads from gymnastics, trampolining and cheerleading all performed a series of displays – a massive well done to everyone and a big thank you to the weather for being so glorious. As an additional bonus after performing the displays we all ran over to the Europa centre to watch our very own Cathy Page and Rebecca Blacklock carry the Olympic torch!
